The touch of ancient history in Piraeus

On the Coast of Themistocleus to the Cove of Aphrodite and Phreattyda

Overview

Magnificent sunsets, exquisite tastes, unique views of the sea, the touch of the ancient history of the city that reaches back to the time of Themistocles and Conon, emblematic neoclassical buildings, an organized beach for swimming:  All unfold in the 2.5 km of this route along of the Piraeus Peninsula, next to the water.

If you are coming from where the cruise ships dock, you can easily find Chatzikyriakeio, at 18 Kleisovis Street, from Miaouli Beach (otherwise you can start the walk from this point). The Hatzikyriakion Child Protection Foundation has been designated by the Ministry of Culture as a "Work of Art and Historical Preserved Monument". The second landmark is the School of Naval Cadets (Chatzikyriakou 48). It is worth admiring the exterior of the building with its neoclassical features signed by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller. Piraeus and visitors who have been "initiated" to the flavors of Piraeus have been frequenting some of the many fish taverns and ouzo restaurants near the Naval Cadet School and Hatzikyriakou Avenue for years. Stop by for fresh seafood, fish and appetizers. Otherwise, set sail for Piraeus, where you have many more options.

From Georgiou Theotoki, you will go out to Themistokleous Beach (Piraiki) and you will always have a view of the sea, while the fresh breeze will accompany your every step. It is one of the most beautiful places to walk - and even more beautiful at sunset. In various places, in fact, on the rocks of the coast you will see remains of the Kononeian wall that protected the ports of Piraeus in ancient times.
All along Piraeus there are traditional restaurants serving Greek cuisine, fish taverns, ouzo and cafes - quite a few even have tables outside.

The walk will bring you to the picturesque Aphrodite Cove (or Baikoutsis) with the Cross -monument of the Unknown Sailor- and the "island" church of Agios Nikolaos. Continuing on the Themistokleous Coast you will reach Freattyda where there is an organized beach. Time for a swim!
The continuation of this walk leads to Zeas marina, in Passalimani (see Walk 1).

Coast of Themistocleus

A unique route, next to the sea. The route is recommended for families with or without children, for walks with friends, with pets, for couples but why not also for solo travelers.

Stop
Aphrodite Bay

As you walk in Piraiki, you wander around, you sing softly to Melina and the "Children of Piraeus" and you taste the wave that whips the walls of Themistokleos. In short, you experience a typical Piraeus autumn day, which is an experience in itself.

Finish
Freattida

The area known since ancient times. From the classic "En Freattyi" Court. If it is true that Piraeus is an island in Attica, then Freattyda is a village on the island.

(although this generally applies to the wider area, since from Pigada to Gallipoli and from Serfiotou Square to Piraiki and Palataki the residents still say "Oh, I have to go down to Piraeus", as the villager would say in Ano Mera of Mykonos that he must go down to Chora, in Matogiannia).

Freattyda, however, is a special case. And unlike the Prophet Elias that we talked about in the previous Journey, he has not kept, at least visibly, any thread that connects him to the past. Freattyda - and we are talking about the area defined by the seafront from the little bridge, after the old Olympiakos club, up to Terpsichori above the beach - is a "construction" of the 60s.
