At the location where you see the Holy Trinity of Piraeus today, there used to be an ancient monastery that was destroyed during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. It was re-founded in 1839 and completed between 1841-1845. During the bombardment of Piraeus by the Allied planes on January 11, 1944, the church was not only demolished but also buried people who had taken refuge there. Nevertheless, the facade, bell towers, and the large multi-candle chandelier were preserved, and the black and white photographs that depicted them were widespread in those times.
The construction of the new church brought the Archaeological Service to the forefront, believing that beneath it lay the ancient Emporium, the Commodity Exchange, and other ancient structures. Pottery, gold coins, mosaics, inscriptions, and other objects were discovered, which led the Archaeological Service to issue a stop order for the construction of the Holy Trinity. There were objections, but the construction continued, while the ancient architectural elements were preserved, which you can admire in the chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius.
The present church was consecrated in 1964 and completed in 1979, based on the designs of Georgios St. Nomikos. It follows Byzantine patterns and has an interior area of 835 square meters. It can accommodate 3,100 people. The exterior doors are made of hammered copper, and the marble iconostasis is intricate.
Apart from its religious functions, the Holy Trinity also hosts concerts and activities organized by the Metropolis and local authorities.
