It is one of the most famous landmarks in Piraeus and stands out with its "futuristic" design. When Olympiacos plays, the cheers of the fans reverberate throughout the city, and powerful floodlights make the spectacle even more spectacular.
The appearance you see today has no relation to the original stadium.
The old stadium was built to be a Velodrome for the 1896 Athens Olympic Games and later became the home ground of Olympiacos, being used as a stadium during the 1920s.
It was reconstructed in 1960 and named after Georgios Karaiskakis (1782-1827), a general and national hero who was killed near the stadium's location during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. In this stadium, the team and Olympiacos fans experienced many intense moments and celebrated significant victories.
In 1969, it hosted the European Athletics Championships, and in 1971, it was the venue for the finals of the Greek Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup.
In 1997, Olympiacos played its last game in this historic stadium. The new Karaiskakis Stadium opened its doors again in 2004, and since then, it has been continuously modernized. It is a state-of-the-art, fully covered football stadium with a capacity of 32,115 seats.
It is worth visiting the facilities and also checking out the Olympiacos Museum and the team's official store, "Red Store."
